Residency and French Nationality

What’s DELF?

The DELF (Diplôme d’Etudes en Langue Française) and DALF (Diplôme Approfondi de Langue
Française) are the two language diplomas issued by the French Ministry of Education. These
certificates show that, in the eyes of the State you have a sufficiently good level of French to be
comfortable in most everyday situations.

The B1 DELF certification is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
(CEFR). Having a DELF B1 certification thus serves as an invaluable international recognition of
French proficiency which can qualify you for residency, work or other opportunities.

The B1 DELF Exam Format

The DELF exams test candidates on four key skills:

  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking

The exams are State exams with fixed dates and our nearest centre is Auch. You can be an external
candidate and prepare yourself or sign up with different centres for a package. The documents used
in the exam are real life ones from the papers, advertizing, timetables, anything current. You don’t
study literature although you could chat about it during the oral part of the test which would
impress most examiners! You need to have a good grasp of different tenses as well as write with
accuracy. In the current speaking part you have to persuade the examiner about something and in
the role play you need to decide if you are using ‘tu’ or ‘vous’.

How do I help?

Having established your existing level in French and your ideal timeline we work together on each part of the exam. Some parts usually need more practise, like the writing, and some parts need good exam technique, like the listening and comprehension. Method is as important as knowledge. Many of us haven’t taken a formal exam for years. I work towards you being able to complete the questions within the allotted timeframe including checking for mistakes. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail, to paraphrase Benjamin Franklin.
